A devastating fire outbreak in the early hours of Monday claimed the lives of six people and left several others injured in the Sabon Gari area of Kano State. The incident, which occurred in a residential building, also saw six individuals rescued by emergency responders and local residents who rushed to the scene.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started around 2:00 a.m. and quickly spread through the building, trapping occupants inside. “We heard loud screams and saw flames engulfing the house. People were running everywhere, trying to help, but the fire was too intense,” said Musa Ibrahim, a neighbor.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed that the blaze was caused by an electrical fault. “Our preliminary investigation suggests that the fire originated from a faulty wiring system in one of the rooms. Unfortunately, the building lacked proper fire safety measures, which made it difficult for occupants to escape,” said Fire Service spokesperson Saminu Abdullahi.
Emergency teams worked tirelessly to put out the flames and rescue survivors. Six people were pulled from the burning building and rushed to the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment for burns and smoke inhalation. However, six others, including two children, could not be saved.
The tragic incident has left the community in mourning, with many calling for stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations in residential buildings. “This is a wake-up call for all of us. We need to ensure that our homes are safe and equipped to handle emergencies like this,” said Hajiya Fatima Usman, a local resident.
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and promised to provide support to those affected. “This is a heartbreaking loss for our state. We will investigate the cause of the fire and take necessary steps to prevent such tragedies in the future,” the governor said in a statement.
As the community begins to recover from the shock, authorities have urged residents to prioritize fire safety measures, including the installation of smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in their homes.
