The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) has thrown its weight behind state governors in the party’s ongoing leadership crisis, while reaffirming Henry Ude-Okoye as national secretary. The decision was reached during an emergency meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, signaling a pivotal shift in the party’s power dynamics.
Sources within the BoT revealed the move aims to stabilize the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections. “Unity and cohesion remain our priority,” a BoT member stated anonymously. “Governors’ perspectives are critical to resolving these challenges.”
Ude-Okoye’s confirmation follows weeks of contention, with some factions questioning his appointment process. Critics had alleged procedural flaws, but the BoT dismissed these claims, citing compliance with party guidelines. “His leadership is vital for administrative continuity,” the BoT’s resolution read.
The PDP has been plagued by internal disputes since its 2023 electoral losses, exacerbated by clashes between governors and the National Working Committee (NWC). Governors, who control significant political machinery, have demanded greater influence over party decisions.
Opposition to the BoT’s stance emerged swiftly. A northwest PDP chapter leader, who requested anonymity, called the move “a forced peace that ignores grassroots concerns.” Another faction warned it could deepen existing rifts.
Political analysts suggest the BoT’s alignment with governors reflects pragmatic calculations. “Governors hold financial and structural power; sidelining them risks further fragmentation,” said Dr. Ngozi Okoro, a governance expert.
Ude-Okoye, seen as a bridge between factions, pledged to foster dialogue. “My focus is on reconciliation and rebuilding trust,” he told reporters after the announcement.
The party’s National Chairman, Amb. Umar Damagum, urged members to “embbrace this decision as a step toward renewal.” However, skeptics argue tangible reforms, not symbolic gestures, are needed to revive the PDP’s fortunes.
