The Nigerian Senate has announced a major reshuffle of its standing committees, appointing new chairmen to oversee key legislative functions. The decision, ratified during Tuesday’s plenary session, aims to enhance efficiency and address concerns over committee performance.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated that the changes were necessary to align with the 10th Assembly’s legislative agenda. “This reshuffle reflects our commitment to delivering impactful governance and ensuring committees are led by capable hands,” he said.
Among the notable appointments, Senator Ali Ndume was named Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, while Senator Orji Uzor Kalu took over the Finance Committee. The Ethics and Privileges Committee will now be headed by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.
The reshuffle has sparked mixed reactions among lawmakers. Some praised the move as a step toward inclusivity, while others expressed concerns over perceived favoritism. “Transparency must guide such decisions to maintain trust,” remarked Senator Abdul Ningi.
