HAPPENING NOW: Suspended Ogun Monarch Arraigned Over Assault of Elderly Man

The Ogun State Police Command today arraigned the suspended traditional ruler of Orile Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Adewale Ogunjobi, before the Ifo Magistrate Court on charges of conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace . This follows widespread outrage over a viral video showing the monarch verbally and physically assaulting a 73-year-old chief, Abraham Areola, while his aides forced the elderly man to kneel and prostrate on a dirt path .

In the footage, Ogunjobi was heard hurling threats and curses at Areola, accusing him of betrayal and claiming ownership of “the entire Nigeria Police Force” . The incident prompted swift condemnation from both the public and authorities. Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, ordered an immediate investigation, vowing to uphold the rule of law .

The state government suspended Ogunjobi for six months earlier today, stripping him of his royal paraphernalia pending further investigations. A statement by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs emphasized that his actions violated Section 52(1) of the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs’ Law 2021, which mandates dignity for traditional institutions .

Police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed the monarch’s arraignment, stating, “The police will continue to uphold the core values of our profession and ensure justice prevails” . Ogunjobi was granted bail, and the case has been adjourned to March 6, 2025, for further proceedings .

The victim, Areola, reportedly endured physical strikes and public humiliation during the altercation, which police described as “unacceptable” regardless of the perpetrator’s status . Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to protecting citizens’ rights, signaling zero tolerance for abuse of power.

This case has reignited debates on accountability within Nigeria’s traditional institutions, with many calling for stricter oversight to prevent similar incidents.
