The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Kaduna State University (KASU) has announced plans to commence an indefinite strike on February 11, 2025, over unresolved issues with the state government. The decision was reached during an emergency congress held on Sunday, where members expressed frustration over the government’s failure to address their demands, including unpaid salaries, inadequate funding, and poor working conditions.
In a statement issued by the KASU ASUU Chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, the union accused the state government of reneging on agreements reached during previous negotiations. “Despite several appeals and ultimatums, the government has refused to prioritize the welfare of our members or the development of the university. We are left with no choice but to withdraw our services until our demands are met,” Adamu stated.
The strike is expected to disrupt academic activities at the university, affecting thousands of students who are currently in the middle of the academic session. “This is a difficult decision, but we cannot continue to work under such deplorable conditions. Our members are owed months of salaries, and the university lacks basic infrastructure to function effectively,” Adamu added.
Students and parents have expressed concern over the impending strike, with many calling for urgent intervention to prevent further disruptions. “We are tired of these constant strikes. The government needs to take education seriously and address the issues raised by ASUU,” said Fatima Abdullahi, a final-year student at KASU.
The Kaduna State government has yet to issue an official response to the strike notice. However, sources within the government indicate that efforts are being made to engage with the union to resolve the crisis.
This latest development adds to the growing challenges facing Nigeria’s education sector, which has been plagued by frequent strikes and underfunding. Stakeholders are urging both parties to return to the negotiating table to find a lasting solution.
As the countdown to the strike begins, all eyes are on the Kaduna State government to see if it will take decisive action to avert another academic shutdown.
